  • Background

Timeline

  • In 312 Roman Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity and established his new capital at Byzantium, renaming it Constantinople (Istanbul). It was strategically located on the Bosphorus , between Europe and Asia
  • Eastern Christian Byzantine Empire lasted 1000 years from 4th Century to 1452
  • Ottoman Muslim Empire lasted 600 years from 1453 to 1918
  • 1923 establishment of Republic of Turkey by Mustafa Kamal Ataturk

Key Facts

  • Christianity spread rapidly in the early centuries because of the ease of travel due to the Roman peace
  • It was also assisted by the dominance of Hellenistic culture where Greek was the common language
  • And a sense of urgency resulting from Christ’s expected return
  • Early Christian communities grew out of local Jewish synagogues but rapidly attracted Gentiles because of its monotheism, high moral standards and frequent communal gatherings.
  • Communities continued to grow despite public hostility and some persecution
  • In the early Church there were frequent doctrinal and structural divisions that were brought to some resolution at First Council of Nicaea : the first ecumenical council of the Christian church which took place in 325 in the ancient city of Nicaea (now Iznik, Turkey).

  1. PSALMS

Wed 16th  Psalm 146

My soul, give praise to the Lord

I will praise the Lord all my life,

sing praise to my God while I live.

Put no trust in princes,

in mortal man who cannot save.

Take their breath, they return to the earth,

and their plans that day come to nothing.

Blessed is he who is helped by Jacobʼs God,

whose hope is in the Lord his God,

who made the heavens and the earth,

the seas and all they contain,

who preserves fidelity forever,

 who does justice to those who are oppressed.

It is he who gives bread to the hungry,

the Lord who sets prisoners free,

the Lord who opens the eyes of the blind,

the Lord who raises up those who are bowed down.

It is the Lord who loves the just,

the Lord who protects the stranger

and upholds the orphan and the widow,

but thwarts the path of the wicked.

The Lord will reign forever,

the God of Sion from age to age.

Thu 17th  Psalm 63

O God, you are my God; at dawn I seek you;

for you my soul is thirsting.

For you my flesh is pining,

like a dry, weary land without water.

I have come before you in the sanctuary,

to behold your strength and your glory.

Your loving mercy is better than life;

my lips will speak your praise.

I will bless you all my life;

in your name I will lift up my hands.

My soul shall be filled as with a banquet;

with joyful lips, my mouth shall praise you.

When I remember you upon my bed,

I muse on you through the watches of the night.

For you have been my strength;

in the shadow of your wings I rejoice.

My soul clings fast to you;

your right hand upholds me.

Those who seek to destroy my life

shall go down to the depths of the earth.

Put to the power of the sword,

they shall be left as prey for the jackals.

But the king shall rejoice in God;

all that swear by him shall exult,

for the mouth of liars shall be silenced.

Fri 18th Psalm 149

Sing a new song to the Lord,

his praise in the assembly of the faithful.

Let Israel rejoice in its Maker;

let Sionʼs children exult in their king.

Let them praise his name with dancing,

and make music with timbrel and harp.

For the Lord takes delight in his people;

he crowns the poor with salvation.

Let the faithful exult in glory,

and rejoice as they take their rest.

Let the praise of God be in their mouths

and a two-edged sword in their hand,

To deal out vengeance to the nations

and punishment upon the peoples;

to bind their kings in chains

and their nobles in fetters of iron;

to carry out the judgment decreed.

This is an honour for all his faithful.

Sat 19th Psalm 92

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,

to make music to your name, O Most High,

to proclaim your loving mercy in the morning,

and your truth in the watches of the night,

on the ten-stringed lyre and the lute,

with the sound of song on the harp.

You have gladdened me, O Lord by your deeds;

for the work of your hands I shout with joy.

O Lord, how great are your works!

How deep are your designs!

The senseless cannot know this,

and the fool cannot understand.

Though the wicked spring up like grass,

and all who do evil thrive,

they are doomed to be eternally destroyed.

But you, O Lord, are eternally on high.

See, your enemies, O Lord,

see, your enemies will perish;

all who do evil will be scattered.

To me you give the wild ox’s strength;

you have poured out on me purest oil.

My eyes looked in triumph on my foes;

my ears heard gladly of their fall.

The just will flourish like the palm tree,

and grow like a Lebanon cedar.

Planted in the house of the Lord

they will flourish in the courts of our God,

still bearing fruit when they are old,

still full of sap, still green,

to proclaim that the Lord is upright.

In him, my rock, there is no wrong.

Mon 21st Psalm 5

To my words give ear, O Lord;

give heed to my sighs.

Attend to the sound of my cry,

my King and my God.

To you do I pray, O Lord,

In the morning you hear my voice;

in the morning I plead and watch before you.

You are no God who delights in evil;

no sinner is your guest.

The boastful shall not stand their ground

before your eyes.

All who do evil you despise;

all who lie you destroy.

The deceitful and those who shed blood,

the Lord detests.

Yet through the greatness of your merciful love,

I enter your house.

I bow down before your holy temple,

in awe of you.

Lead me, Lord, in your justice,

because of my foes;

make straight your way before me.

No truth can be found in their mouths,

their heart is all malice,

their throat a wide-open grave;

with their tongue they flatter.

Declare them guilty, O God.

Let them fail in their designs.

Drive them out for their many transgressions,

for against you have they rebelled.

All who take refuge in you shall be glad,

and ever cry out their joy.

You shelter them; in you they rejoice,

those who love your name.

It is you who bless the just one, O Lord;

you surround him with your favour like a shield.

Tue 22nd  Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd;

there is nothing I shall want.

Fresh and green are the pastures

where he gives me repose.

Near restful waters he leads me;

he revives my soul.

He guides me along the right path,

for the sake of his name.

Though I should walk in the valley of the shadow of death,

no evil would I fear, for you are with me.

Your crook and your staff will give me comfort.

You have prepared a table before me

in the sight of my foes.

My head you have anointed with oil;

my cup is overflowing.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me

all the days of my life.

In the Lord”s own house shall I dwell

for length of days unending.

Wed 23rd  Judith – Chapter 16

Begin a song to my God with tambourines,
sing to my Lord with cymbals.
Raise to him a new psalm;
exalt him, and call upon his name.
For the Lord is a God who crushes wars;

I will sing to my God a new song:
O Lord, you are great and glorious,
wonderful in strength, invincible.

Let all your creatures serve you,
for you spoke, and they were made.
You sent forth your spirit,[f] and it formed them;[g]
there is none that can resist your voice.

For the mountains shall be shaken to their foundations with the waters;
before your glance the rocks shall melt like wax.
But to those who fear you
you show mercy.

Thu 24th  Psalm 48

Great is the Lord and highly to be praised

in the city of our God.

His holy mountain rises in beauty,

the joy of all the earth.

Mount Sion, in the heart of the North,

the city of the Mighty King!

God, in the midst of its citadels,

has shown himself its stronghold.

Behold! the kings assembled;

together they advanced.

They saw; at once they marveled;

dismayed, they fled in fear.

A trembling seized them there,

anguish, like pangs in giving birth,

as when the east wind shatters

the ships of Tarshish.

As we have heard, so we have seen

in the city of our God,

in the city of the Lord of hosts,

which God establishes forever.

Your merciful love, O God,

we ponder in your temple.

Your praise, O God, like your name,

reaches the ends of the earth.

Your right hand is filled with saving justice.

Mount Sion rejoices.

The daughters of Judah rejoice

at the sight of your judgments.

Walk through Sion, walk all around her;

count the number of her towers.

Consider all her ramparts;

examine her castles,

That you may tell the next generation

that such is our God,

our God forever and always.

He will guide us forever.

Fri 25th  Psalm 100

Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth.

Serve the LORD with gladness.

Come before him, singing for joy.

Know that he, the Lord is God.

He made us; we belong to him.

We are his people, the sheep of his flock.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving

and his courts with songs of praise.

Give thanks to him, and bless his name.

Indeed, how good is the Lord,

eternal his merciful love.

He is faithful from age to age.

Sat 26th  Psalm 118

I call with all my heart; Lord, answer me.

I will observe your statutes.

I call upon you; save me,

and I will keep your decrees.

I rise before dawn and cry for help;

I have hoped in your word.

My eyes awaken before dawn,

to ponder your promise.

In your mercy, hear my voice, O Lord;

give me life by your decrees.

Those who pursue me with malice draw near;

they are far from your law.

But you, O Lord, are close;

all your commands are truth.

From of old I have known that your decrees

are established forever.

Sun 27th Psalm 150

Praise God in his holy place;

praise him in his mighty firmament.

Praise him for his powerful deeds;

praise him for his boundless grandeur.

O praise him with sound of trumpet;

praise him with lute and harp.

Praise him with timbrel and dance;

praise him with strings and pipes.

O praise him with resounding cymbals;

praise him with clashing of cymbals.

Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!

Mon 28th  Ephesians 1

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

just as he chose us in Christ[b] before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love.

He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us.

With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ,

as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth

Tue 29th  Psalm 65

Praise is due to you

in Sion, O God.

To you we pay our vows in Jerusalem,

you who hear our prayer.

To you all flesh will come.

Our evil deeds are too heavy for us,

but our transgressions you wipe away.

Blessed is he whom you choose and call

to dwell in your courts.

We are filled with the good things of your house,

of your holy temple.

With wondrous deliverance you answer us,

O God our saviour.

You are the hope of all the earth,

and of far distant isles.

You establish the mountains with your strength;

you are girded with power.

You still the roaring of the seas,

the roaring of their waves,

and the tumult of the peoples.

Distant peoples stand in awe

at your wondrous deeds.

The lands of sunrise and sunset

you fill with your joy.

You visit the earth, give it water;

you fill it with riches.

Godʼs ever-flowing river brims over

to prepare the grain.

And thus you provide for the earth:

you drench its furrows;

you level it, soften it with showers;

you bless its growth.

You crown the year with your bounty.

Abundance flows in your pathways;

in pastures of the desert it flows.

The hills are girded with joy,

the meadows clothed with flocks.

The valleys are decked with wheat.

They shout for joy; yes, they sing!

Wed 30th  1 Samuel 2

My heart exults in the Lord!
my strength is exalted in my God.
My mouth derides my enemies,
because I rejoice in my victory.

There is no Holy One like the Lord,
no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God.

Talk no more so very proudly,
let not arrogance come from your mouth;
for the Lord is a God of knowledge,
and by him actions are weighed.

The bows of the mighty are broken,
but the feeble gird on strength.
Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,
but those who were hungry are fat with spoil.
The barren has borne seven,
but she who has many children is forlorn.

The Lord kills and brings to life;
he brings down to Sheol and raises up.
The Lord makes poor and makes rich;
he brings low, he also exalts.

He raises up the poor from the dust;
he lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes
and inherit a seat of honour.

For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,
and on them he has set the world.

He will guard the feet of his faithful ones,
but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness;
or not by might does one prevail.

The Lord! His adversaries shall be shattered;

the Most High[d] will thunder in heaven.
The Lord will judge the ends of the earth;
he will give strength to his king,

and exalt the power of his anointed.’

Thu 31st  Psalm 81

Sing joyfully to God our strength,

shout in triumph to the God of Jacob.

Raise a song and sound the timbrel,

the sweet-sounding harp and the lute;

blow the trumpet at the new moon,

when the moon is full, on our feast.

For this is a statute in Israel,

a command of the God of Jacob.

He made it a decree for Joseph,

when he went out from the land of Egypt.

A voice I did not know said to me:

“I freed your shoulder from the burden;

your hands were freed from the builderʼs basket.

You called in distress and I delivered you.

I answered, concealed in the thunder;

at the waters of Meribah I tested you.

Listen, my people, as I warn you.

O Israel, if only you would heed!

Let there be no strange god among you,

nor shall you worship a foreign god.

I am the Lord your God,

who brought you up from the land of Egypt.

Open wide your mouth, and I will fill it.

But my people did not heed my voice,

and Israel would not obey me.

So I left them in their stubbornness of heart,

to follow their own designs.

O that my people would heed me,

that Israel would walk in my ways!

At once I would subdue their foes,

turn my hand against their enemies.

Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him,

and their subjection would last forever.

But Israel I would feed with finest wheat,

and satisfy with honey from the rock.”

  1. HYMNS

1 Strong and Constant

I will be Yahweh who walks with you
You will be always within my hand
Take my heart and give it all to me

Strong and constant is my love
Strong and constant is my love

Should you wander far away from me
I will search for you in every land
Should you call, then you will truly know

Strong and constant is my love
Strong and constant is my love

When you know sorrow within your life
I will come, I will embrace your heart
Through your pain you will discover me

Strong and constant is my love
Strong and constant is my love

2 Come to Me

Come to me, all who labour and are heavy burdened
And I shall give you rest
Take up my yoke and learn from me
For I am meek and humble of heart
And you’ll find rest for your souls
Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden is light

You, God, are my shepherd, I shall never be in need
Fresh and green are the meadows where you give me rest

Come to me, all who labour and are heavy burdened
And I shall give you rest
Take up my yoke and learn from me
For I am meek and humble of heart
And you’ll find rest for your souls
Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden is light

Beside peaceful waters you restore my true self
There you lead me to walk in the path of new life

Come to me . all who labour and are heavy burdened
And I shall give you rest
Take up my yoke and learn from me
For I am meek and humble of heart

And you’ll find rest for your souls
Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden is light

3  The Servant Song

Will you let me be your servant
Let me be as Christ to you
Pray that I may have the grace
To let you be my servant too

We are pilgrims on a journey
Fellow travelers on the road
We are here to help each other
Walk the mile and bear the load

I will hold the Christ-light for you
In the nighttime of your fear
I will hold my hand out to you
Speak the peace you long to hear

I will weep when you are weeping
When you laugh, I’ll laugh with you
I will share your joy and sorrow
Till we’ve seen this journey through

When we sing to God in heaven
We will find such harmony
Born of all we’ve known together
Of Christ’s love and agony

Will you let me be your servant
Let me be as Christ to you
Pray that I may have the grace
To let you be my servant too

4   Sing to the mountains
Sing to the mountains, sing to the sea.
Raise your voices, lift your hearts.
This is the day the Lord has made.
Let all the earth rejoice

I will give thanks to you, my Lord.
You have answered my plea.
You have saved my soul from death.
You are my strength and my song.[Refrain}

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
heaven and earth are full of your glory. [Refrain]

This is the day that the Lord has made.
Let us be glad and rejoice.
He has turned all death to life.
Sing of the glory of God. [Refrain]

5  We Walk by Faith

We walk by faith and not by sight;
no gracious words we hear
from Him who spoke as none e’er spoke,
but we believe Him near.

We may not touch His hands and side,
nor follow where He trod;
but in His promise we rejoice
and cry, “My Lord and God!”

Help then, O Lord, our unbelief;
and may our faith abound
to call on You when You are near
and seek where You are found.

That, when our life of faith is done,
in realms of clearer light,
may we behold You as You are
with full and endless sight.

6  Here I am, Lord

I, the Lord of sea and sky
I have heard my people cry
All who dwell in dark and sin
My hand will save

I, who made the stars of night
I will make their darkness bright
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night
I will go, Lord, if you lead me
I will hold your people in my heart

I, the Lord of snow and rain
I have borne my people’s pain
I have wept for love of them
They turn away

I will break their hearts of stone
Give them hearts for love alone
Who will speak my word to them
Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night
I will go, Lord, if you lead me
I will hold your people in my heart

I, the Lord of wind and flame
I will tend the poor and lame
I will set a feast for them
My hand will save

Finest bread I will provide
‘Til their hearts be satisfied
I will give my life to them
Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night
I will go, Lord, if you lead me
I will hold your people in my heart

7  Come as you Are

Come as you are, that’s how I want you
Come as you are, feel quite at home
Close to my heart, loved and forgiven
Come as you are, why stand alone?

No need to fear, love sets no limits
No need to fear, love never ends
Don’t run away, shamed and disheartened
Rest in my love, trust me again

I came to call sinners, not just the virtuous
I came to bring peace, not to condemn
Each time you fail, to live by my promise
Why do you think, I’d love you the less?

Come as you are, that’s how I love you
Come as you are, trust me again
Nothing can change, the love that I bear you
All will be well, just come as you are.

8  Though the Mountains may Fall
Though the mountains may fall and the hills turn to dust
Yet the love of the Lord will stand
As a shelter for all who will call on His name
Sing the praise and the glory of God

Could the Lord ever leave you?
Could the Lord forget his love?
Though a mother forsake her child, He will not abandon you

Though the mountains may fall and the hills turn to dust
Yet the love of the Lord will stand
As a shelter for all who will call on his name
Sing the praise and the glory of God

Should you turn and forsake Him
He will gently call your name
Should you wander away from Him
He will always take you back

Though the mountains may fall and the hills turn to dust
Yet the love of the Lord will stand
As a shelter for all who will call on his name
Sing the praise and the glory of God

9  Amazing Grace

Amazing grace (how sweet the sound)
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.

Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come:
’tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
his word my hope secures;
he will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures.

Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
and mortal life shall cease:
I shall possess, within the veil,
a life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
the sun forbear to shine;
but God, who called me here below,
will be forever mine.

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,

Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,
Be there at our labors, and give us, we pray,
Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
Your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace,
Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,
Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

Psalm 4

I called, the God of justice gave me answer;

from anguish you released me, have mercy and hear me!

Children of man, how long will my glory be dishonored,

will you love what is futile and seek what is false?

Know that the LORD works wonders for his faithful one;

the LORD will hear me whenever I call him.

Tremble, do not sin: ponder on your bed and be still.

Offer right sacrifice, and trust in the Lord.

“What can bring us happiness?” many say.

Lift up the light of your face on us, O Lord

You have put into my heart a greater joy

than abundance of grain and new wine can provide.

In peace I will lie down and fall asleep,

for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Psalm 91

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High,

and abides in the shade of the Almighty,

says to the Lord, “My refuge,

my stronghold, my God in whom I trust!”

He will free you from the snare of the fowler,

from the destructive plague;

he will conceal you with his pinions,

and under his wings you will find refuge.

You will not fear the terror of the night,

nor the arrow that flies by day,

nor the plague that prowls in the darkness,

nor the scourge that lays waste at noon.

A thousand may fall at your side,

ten thousand fall at your right:

you it will never approach.

His faithfulness is buckler and shield.

Your eyes have only to look

to see how the wicked are repaid.

For you, O LORD, are my refuge.

You have made the Most High your dwelling.

Upon you no evil shall fall,

no plague approach your tent.

For you has he commanded his angels

to keep you in all your ways.

They shall bear you upon their hands,

lest you strike your foot against a stone.

On the lion and the viper you will tread,

and trample the young lion and the serpent.

Since he clings to me in love, I will free him,

protect him, for he knows my name.

When he calls on me, I will answer him;

I will be with him in distress;

I will deliver him, and give him glory.

With length of days I will content him;

I will show him my saving power.

Psalm 134

O come, bless the Lord,

all you servants of the Lord

who stand by night in the courts

of the house of the Lord

Lift up your hands to the holy place,

and bless the Lord.

May the Lord bless you from Sion,

he who made both heaven & earth

PROFESSION OF FAITH

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty

Maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God

Eternally begotten of the Father

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father.

Through him all things are made

For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven.

By the power of the Holy Spirit,

He was born of the Virgin Mary and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate

He suffered, died and was buried.

On the third day, He rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and His kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son, He is worshipped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the

world to come. Amen.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

Blessed be God forever.

The Priest then prays that our gifts will be acceptable to God, the Father.

Then the Priest asks us to proclaim our faith.

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

The Priest prays that Jesus will give us the gift of peace.

  1. ORDER OF ROSARY

A Joyful Mystery – Nativity
And she brought forth her firstborn son, wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for him in the inn (Luke 1: 41-42)

Hail Mary, full of Grace the Lord is with you. Blessed art you among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death, Amen

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

O My Jesus. Forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of your mercy. Amen

Hail holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning, and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn them most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray. O God, whose only begotten Son, by his life, death and resurrection has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech thee, that meditating upon these mysteries in the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain, and obtain what they promise: through the same Christ our Lord. Amen
